Yes! That's right! This year's Oxford word
of the year is "rizz": attractiveness, charm
or skill in flirtation that allows one to
easily attract a romantic partner. The
word might not mean anything to you if
you're not Generation Z but it's used
massively online with billions of views
of the hashtag #rizz on Tik Tok. Technology is
often a driver for language change so ...um...
things that represent new
technology or are brought in referring to
new technology are often incorporated
into the language which is changing all
the time. Tik Tok and social media are
incredibly creative places and that's
what OUP are looking for when they look
for their word of the year. They're
looking for the creativity of language.
The term found fame through YouTuber and
Twitch streamer Kai Cenat who is widely
credited with having popularized the
word. With it thought to be a phonetic
shortening of "charisma". The word
continued to grow throughout the year
due to actor Tom Holland being asked by
BuzzFeed about the secret to his rizz.
"I have no rizz whatsoever. I have limited rizz.
my brother Paddy has ultimate rizz". "Rizz" was
one of eight words on a short list all
chosen to reflect the mood and character
of this year. The list was narrowed down
by a public vote before Oxford crowned
"rizz" as the overall winner. "I just think
it's a bit silly. There's so many better words.
Not that I'm going to name any but
I think there... there's better ones".
"Should have been 'swifty'. 'Swifty' was in the running
so can't see why it wasn't". "I... I work with
kids. I hear it a lot and.. I just... it's
just a kind of meaningless word."
"Oh really I love the word rizz yeah."
"I don't know what rizz is." The other finalists
were "prompt": the instruction given to an
artificial intelligence program that
influences the content created. And
"Swifty": the name given to an avid fan of
a certain singer.
